it would appear that my version of Word for Mac2004 has a glitch: on several occasions its grammar checker suggests i use 'there' when the correct word is 'their'. this might explain why there are so many similar errors in my students' essays. there is a belief amongst tutors that their students don't know their there's from their their's and their computer isn't helping.

Reminds me of my history lecturer in my first year of university. After handing back our essays, he spent ten minutes reminding us of the difference between "there", "their" and "they're". Not that I needed it much!

They're only using their 'theres' in that way to confound you. There, there.
But do they put a circle above their i's or a dot?
Best wishes.

That is the danger of relying on the grammar/spelling checks.

The problem is is you are proof reading in a hurry it is tempting just to click on the change without double checking.
