good morning - david cameron wants the long term unemployed to do community work to earn their benefits. what do i make of this? recently ive been unnerved by how reasonable toryboy sounds when i hear him. he has a seductive manner that contrasts very noticeably with gordon broon and i fear he may succeed where the last few tory hopefuls have failed. but this is a typically tory policy. think about it - cameron says it will help those 'out of touch' with work to get back into the swing of regular employment. it may. but the punitive element: refuse to work on the roads or clearing up mess etc and you will lose benefits. that sounds more like pure thatcherism. mrsT would have said 'make em work or let em starve' - cameron is too savvy and knows that wont wash with non-conservative voters. he has learned from the last ten years. so beware, in a few years time we may have a right wing government led by a persuasive yong politian who sounds ever so reasonable... and i thought we'd just got rid of blair..

absolutely, we do indeed have a right-wing government and have done since TB became PM. What bothers me about the tory scheme is that we don't really have a big problem with unemployment at the moment - if the economy goes tits-up and the unemployed total rises to its 80s levels then are we going to see millions sweeping the streets? as with many of DC's policy ideas it hasn't been thought through

Yeah it is better than it was under the Tories. Camoron is scary as well, it's like he's freshed faced and chirpy unlike the dour looking and sounding Gord on Brown. That shouldn't be a problem but unfortunately as we all know many people seem to use their aesthetic tastes as a benchmark on who is better rather than the substance of their policies.

There was a very interesting discussion about it on the Today programme this morning - it is definitely worth finding it on the BBC's listen again service.

Something about Cameron really unnerves me. Maybe it's the fact his wife looks so cowed all the time. There's something very unsettling about his eyes. I get the impression he's got a really filthy temper on him. Quite aside from his politics, I do not like anything about him. He makes me want to scrub my skin, in much the same way accidentally touching a slug would.

Smacks of the YTS scheme to me. A Thatcheresque way of manipulating unemployment statistics. I like the idea of a slug in power. I am off to invest in a tonne of salt.

Understanding politics exhausts me. Just when I think I'm getting my head around a new policy, maybe even supporting it, it gets ripped apart by somebody else. I wish I could get somebody impartial to write a list of pros and cons and tell me who to vote for - I don't want to waste it, but it seems a waste to vote for any of them as it stands.

I agree with all you say however we do have a right wing government now. Labour stopped being left wing or even social democrat for that matter a long time ago.
I work for a project that helps unemployed people find work and the vast majority of them who come in are genuinely seeking work.
I dont think this policy is a good idea. I graduated a few years ago and just couldn't find a job. Whilst claiming JSA I did some voluntary work to enhance my employability but it took over 2 years to find paid work. I'm not the only one either, increasingly graduates are finding it difficult to find employment. Are the Tories gonna force graduates into street cleaning if they haven't got a job in time but are endeavouring to find it?
